Summer is in full swing! For people, that means swimming pools, cookouts, and family vacations. But what about our pets?

Summer often means we’re home more with our pets, and the warm weather offers pets the opportunity to accompany their owners to the park, lake, and maybe even the cookout where they can sneak a tasty snack. However, despite all the fun that summer holds, the hot weather can be dangerous for our pets. Read below for 5 tips to help your pets stay safe this summer!

  1. Never ever leave your dog in a hot car. Even on a seemingly mild day, the inside of your car can soar past 100 degrees Fahrenheit in a matter of minutes. Cracking the windows is simply not enough to provide adequate air flow, so when in doubt, leave your pooch at home where it’s cool.
  2. Take care of your pet’s paws! Before taking your dog for a walk, place the back of your hand on the pavement for 10 seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Instead, try letting them do their business in a grassy or mulched area that won’t burn their sensitive paw pads.
  3. Watch out for pesky parasites! Fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites abound during the warm summer months, and your pet depends on you to provide preventatives to keep these critters at bay. Your pet should receive a yearly fecal exam to confirm that he or she is parasite-free, and a monthly heartworm and flea preventative will help ensure your pet stays healthy when parasites are at their worst.
  4. Know the signs of heat exhaustion. In the event that your dog begins to overheat, it is crucial that you recognize the signs and provide care quickly. Watch for panting, excessive drooling, reddened gums, dehydration, and a rapid heart rate. Ensure that your dog moves to a cool environment immediately, provide cool, clean water, and call your veterinarian.
  5. It’s always best to keep pets indoors but if your pet is spending time outside, be sure to provide cool, clean water and plenty of shade.
